Collected, Not Replaced

A home is never finished. It is gathered, one considered piece at a time.

Pasqual McDermott began with a simple conviction: the rooms we love most are not bought in a day. They are built slowly from pieces with a past. Yet so much of what fills our homes is made quickly, made identically, and made to be replaced.

We make the opposite.

Our pillow covers begin with the hands of artisans whose crafts have been passed down through generations. In Pedana, near Machilipatnam, India, cloth is bleached naturally over several days, steeped in myrobalan, and block-printed by hand with dyes drawn from pomegranate shell, alizarin, and iron-fermented jaggery. It is washed in flowing river water and boiled in copper. The process cannot be hurried, and no two lengths are alike. In other workshops, handloomed and hand-printed linens take shape with the same quiet precision.

We honor the wider family of hand-woven cloth too. In Sri Lanka’s Dumbara Valley, near Kandy, weavers still make geometric textiles once woven for the Kandyan kings. Across the island, handloom endures as a home-based craft passed from family to family. And in Kutch, in western India, Vankar weavers at their pit looms in Bhujodi have long woven wool for the Rabari herders.

I have traveled to India to sit beside the people who print our fabric, and to Sri Lanka to meet the artisans who bring it to life. Every cover is cut and sewn in our family production facility in Sri Lanka, in small batches, with the care of people who know the work by name.

Because this cloth takes so long to make, we refuse to waste it. Every remnant becomes something new: cocktail napkins, dining napkins, necklaces. Each is made from the same hand-printed cloth, so the craft is honored down to the last scrap.

Each cover is finished with a zipper, designed to be changed with the seasons and folded away, so one beautiful piece can be refreshed, rested, and returned to. They are made to be kept, not replaced.
